Though a bit Land locked for a Freedom Boat surfing adventure we leave only with smiles on our faces and dreams of one day returning to the enchanting city of Bucharest. Upon arrival to Bucharest, Romania I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The truth is that besides Korea this was as far East as I had been. We found the exchange rate to be a welcome change considering the amount of euro we are usually forced to spend just for a few drinks in countries such as Spain, Italy and France. Though Romania joined the European Union 1 January 2007 the government has set 2014 as a very realistic target year to adopt Euro as their official currency. Until then we should still be able to take advantage of the Romanian (Lei) which is roughly around 3:1 on the U.S. dollar. At less than 20.00 U.S. a day with breakfast included our Hostel was a fitting choice for two wayward travelers. The Midland youth hostel 1 was accommodating and the staff was extremely helpful. After a nice cruise on the lake on Saturday we were treated to lunch and more than a few drinks by Romania’s Minister of Tourism "Nicolai" and associate "Joe". Four hours later our traditional meal with these deligtful characters came to an end and we moved forward to experience the night life that Bucharest had to offer. Ok, I have been living in Europe for a few years I thought I had experienced the late night life that I had tales of when I had danced Salsa until 6AM in Madrid, Spain or Skanking to Reggae until 5AM in Malta’s party town of St. Julian, but nothing could prepare me for dancing until 7AM at Expirat or just trying to move in the completely packed B52 Bar. From singing songs with local diva Diana on the steps of the old factory to eating a typical dish of Sarmale with our newly found Spanish Amigos at Caru’ Cu Bere, Bucharest received our top rating and complete vote of confidence. As I write I dream, that our world will one day have no political boundaries, that the world is as it was created, without fences or blockades just doors of opportunities.
